Biographical and Professional Information

 

Ms. Cummings was born July 12, 1918, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She was educated at Longwood College and received a B.S. degree in 1939. She received her M.A. in 1949 from the University of Washington in Seattle. Ms. Cummings taught English in junior high schools in Norton, Virginia, from 1939-41; Richmond, Virginia, from 1942-43; and high school in Thermopolis, Wyoming, from 1950-57. She taught English and was a counselor for Brevard County Schools in Titusville, Florida, from 1957-73. She served with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942-45. She was a member of American Pen Women, Writers in Company. She received the Rollins College Writers Conference Short Story Award and was nominated for the National Book Award for Children's Literature. Ms. Cummings died February 21, 2001, in Florida.
