Biographical and Professional Information

 

Dean Krakel was born in Laramie, Wyoming in 1952. He is currently a freelance photojournalist and contract photo editor living in Conifer, Colorado. After leaving the Pinedale Roundup, Pinedale, Wyoming in 1988 he joined the photo staff of the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. When the News ceased publication in February 2009 Dean was Director of Photography. He was a part of the News photo team that won Pulitzer Prizes for spot news coverage in 2000 and 2003.

 

Dean's photography and writing have appeared in numerous publications, including National Georgraphic, Outside, Rolling Stone and National Wildlife. For a brief time he worked for the Leo Burnett Agency shooting Marlboro advertisements.

 

He has won numerous awards for photography and photo editing. 

 

Dean recently returned from Ethiopia where he photographed some of the primitive tribes living in the remote Omo River Valley.
