Gil was born in Illinois and educated at St. Louis University (BS-1956, PhD-1967)separated by stints in the U.S. Navy (1948-52)and with the Chevron Oil Co.(1956-61). Principal career (1967-93) was on the faculty of Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., as a Professor of Geophysics. Major research area was Earthquake Seismology. He is now a Professor Emeritus. Gil and wife,Jane, retired to Buffalo in 1993. He became a volunteer and board member with the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum located there. Those activities led to library an archival research in response to the museum's curatorial needs. Wyoming's rich, frontier history and the virtually pristine historical sites led, in turn, to his writing nonfiction articles and then books related to the museum's mission.
