Biographical and Professional Information
Lavinia Dobler and her sister Virginia were the first twins born in Riverton, in 1910. Their parents had drawn lotteries for some of the first homesteads filed on in the area and their father later served as director of the First State Bank in Riverton, and in the Wyoming legislature. The twins attended high school and college in Long Beach, California, where they worked for competing newspapers. Lavinia was a feature writer, her sister a courier, until both young women earned their degrees and returned to Riverton to teach in elementary schools. When her sister married, Lavinia applied for and was accepted as an English supervisor in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She later served as librarian at Scholastic Magazines, where she remained until her retirement. During that period she published 36 books and won the Dodd-Mead "National Librarian of the Year" award. She retired in Riverton, where her octagonal log home was built. (Source: Wyoming in Profile and Westerners by [Jean Henry-Mead]).
