Biographical and Professional Information
As a research geologist & consultant, Professor Hausel is considered a specialist in diamond deposits, colored gemstones, gold, platinum, very old & deformed rocks (Archean complexes) & rare rocks that may host diamonds (kimberlites, lamproites, komatiites, lamprophyres). Over 30 years, he found many treasures in Wyoming & Colorado including a few hundred diamond deposits, the Rattlesnake Hills gold district west of Casper, two world-class gemstone deposits with giant iolites (water sapphire) (Sherman Mountains and Grizzly Creek). One iolite gem weighed >24,000 carats (the largest ever found in the world)! The other iolite deposit could potentially host >2.7 trillion carats of the gemstone. He recovered opals near Riverton weighing >70,000 carats, found a half-dozen ruby and sapphire deposits, a peridot deposit and other gemstones in Wyoming as well as a previously unknown palladium-nickel deposit. He discovered >100 gold occurrences, mapped >650 square miles & mapped all of the historical mining districts in Wyoming. As a consultant, he worked for a number of international diamond, base metal & gold companies & was on the discovery team for the Donlin Creek gold deposit (Alaska) considered to be one of the largest untapped gold deposits in the world.
In 1992, he was the recipient of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist's President's Award for Excellence. In 2001, awarded the Education Award by the National Rock Hound & Lapidary Hall of Fame. In 2004, the Wyoming Geological Association awarded him their highest honor: the Association’s ‘Distinguished Service Award for outstanding endeavors & contributions to the work and progress of the association. In 2006, he was presented the Archimedes’s Award for Geological Sciences & recently recognized as one of the Top 100 Scientists in 2007. His accomplishments have been high-lighted in Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science & Engineering, 2000 Notable American Men, 5000 Personalities of the World, Men of Science & others. In 2009, he was presented the prestigeous "Thayer Lindsley Award for an International Mineral Discovery (Donlin Creek) along with 6 other geologists. Arguably, the most productive geologist in the history of the Wyoming Geological Survey and Wyoming Territorial Geological Survey.

Vitae
Professor Hausel found ruby, sapphire and kyanite gems in Wyoming, started two gold rushes and an opal rush, discovered the first peridot gems in Wyoming (recovered 13,000 carats from two anthills north of Rock Springs). He specialized in detailed geological mapping. Over the years he spent most summers in a tent mapping old gold mines, South Pass, the Seminoe Mountains, Rattlesnake Hills, Copper Mountain, Leucite Hills, State Line, Cooper Hill and Iron Mountain. He talks about some of the wonderful characters he met in a book that is currently in preparation - "Mountain of Gold". One was a caretaker at the Carissa gold mine at South Pass. While some people from Colorado were removing an old wooden door from the historic mill for the rustic wood, instead of confronting them, this recluse removed their car door for a later trade.
He authored >600 papers, books and maps (not including hundreds of abstracts) and presented >400 lectures on finding mineral deposits, mining history and martial arts as a keynote speaker or invited speaker at various conferences and clubs. In 1992, he was the recipient of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist's President's Award for Excellence and the Wyoming Geological Association's Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Endeavors and Contributions. In 2001, due to the efforts of many people across the state, he was inducted into the National Rock Hound & Lapidary Hall of Fame & presented their Education Award. He is the only known Wyomingite to be inducted into this Hall of Fame. In 2004, the Wyoming Geological Association awarded him their highest honor: the association’s ‘Distinguished Service Award for outstanding endeavors & contributions to the work and progress of the association and understanding of Wyoming’s geology. No other member of the Wyoming Geological Survey was presented this award. He is listed in Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, 2000 Notable American Men, 5000 Personalities of the World, and others.
Hausel is also a world-class martial artist with the highest rank attainable in Okinawa Karate (10th degree black belt) and grandmaster of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate. He has trained in martial arts since 1964. He has been honored at the 2004 Instructor of the Year, 2003 International Grandmaster of the Year, 2002 Grandmaster of the Year & 2001 International Instructor of the Year. He has been inducted into 15 Halls of Fame as well as Who’s Who in the 21st Century since 2008. He is also an artist of note and a popular public speaker and was recognized as a Distinguished Lecturer for the University of Wyoming Department of Geology and Geophysics and Laramie Lycem. He is now a freelance writer and consulting geologist and is finishing up 4 more books, three on geology (Mountain of Gold, Gold In Wyoming, World Gemstone Deposits and Geology) and two on martial arts (Laymans Guide to Martial Arts and Making of a Grandmaster).
